Introduction

Sam Hughes was born on January 8th, 1853 in Clarington, Ontario. He joined the infantry and fought Fenian Raids from 1860's to 1870's. In 1875, after his time with the 45th West Durham Battalion of Infantry, he went on to be a teacher. In 1911, he was assigned to be the Minister of Militia and was shortly after, criticized for poor decisions of equipment he gave his troops during the 1st World War.

Criticisms He Received As Minister:

  • Weapons like the Ross Rifle were unreliable.
  • Equipment like shovels for digging trenches were fragile.
  • Clothes would tatter and shred in mere days of being worn.
  • Troops were trained poorly.
  • Unorganized for his training camp.
